Since mid-May, Brno Dam Lake, a popular leisure destination not far from the city centre, has been home to the new ship “Viden” (Vienna) – a symbol of friendship between the two cities.
For centuries, Vienna and Brno have been connected by economic, social and cultural bonds, interrupted only by half a century of separation due to the Iron Curtain. Based on the official partnership instituted by a 1998 memorandum, the City of Brno has named one of its new ships after its Austrian partner as a gesture of friendship.
The launching of the ship and the baptism ceremony took place on 14 May 2011 at Brno Dam Lake in the presence of the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl, and a wide range of delegates from the Austrian capital. The Mayor of Brno, Roman Onderka, who also attended the ceremony, duly handed a miniature model of the steamer over to his prominent guest.
The new vessel measures 25 metres in length, can accommodate up to 200 persons and is barrier-free. Due to the up-to-date, strictly electricity-driven technology used in its construction, the ship runs much more quietly than its older predecessors. It will certainly attract even more visitors to one of the most beloved recreational areas of Brno and contribute positively to the environment.
