Editorial – CENTROPE: Inspiration for the Danube Strategy

Developing a new form of co-operation among 14 countries is the central objective of the Danube Strategy. The focus of joint efforts among the countries contributing to the Danube Strategy has still to be set. The main issues on the table include such areas as spatial planning, socio-economic development and environmental protection. Initiating transnational activities has been central to the CENTROPE project since its inception in 2003. Therefore, CENTROPE may provide directions on the choice of areas of common interest and modes of co-operation.

The articles in this issue of our Newsletter outline how CENTROPE regions have already started to work on common strategies in utilising the economic potential of the Danube. The development of the Danube as a major transport axis is definitely an essential point of departure for economic development in the region. At the same time and equally importantly, the protection of its natural resources calls for transnational co-operation. The prevention of water pollution and the preservation of natural habitats are high on the agenda in all CENTROPE countries. Also, as has become evident during summer 2010, flood prevention must remain a central topic of transnational co-operation.

Since water has no borders, the management of and care for water must needs be a common concern. Only international co-operation can ensure the reconciliation of interests and development perspectives that more often than not prove contradictory.

Find out why it is worthwhile to join forces for the Danube – in CENTROPE and all along its full length of 2,888 km.
